Side Effects

Common side effects include:

Mild diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting

Severe side effects are:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
Confusion
Dark urine
Delirium
Depression
Headache
Fever
Chills, or sore throat
Pain
Redness, or swelling at the injection site
Symptoms of "gray syndrome" in an infant (swelling of the abdomen, pale or blue skin color, vomiting, shock, difficulty breathing, refusal to suck, loose green stools, limp muscles, low temperature)
Unusual bleeding or bruising
Unusual tiredness
Vision changes

Drug Dose Information

Oral, intramuscular or intravenous injection or infusion
Adult- 50 mg/kg body weight in four divided doses (can be doubled in very severe infections, septicaemia, meningitis, reduce
as soon as clinically indicated).

Child- Haemophilus epiglotitis and pyrogenic meningitis: 50 to 100 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses (can be doubled in severe infections, reduce as soon as clinically indicated).

Precautions

Avoid repeated courses and prolonged use

Reduce dose in hepatic impairment and severe renal impairment

Blood counts required before and during treatment

Monitor plasma concentrations in neonates

Lactation 

Regular blood count

Over growth of non-susceptible organism may occur

How To Take

It is available as a capsule taken orally, on an empty stomach. It also available as eye drops to instill into the affected eyes as directed by your physician.
