Use of Drug

Partial seizures and secondary generalised tonic-clonic seizures.

Category Of Drug

Anticonvulsants

Side Effects

Rash, dizziness, headache, lack of coordination, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, drowsiness, and nose inflammation. 

Vomiting, infection, fever, accidental injury, inflammation of pharynx, abdominal pain and tremor.

 Fever, abdominal pain and neck pain. 

Diarrhea, indigestion, constipation and loss of appetite. 

Joint/muscle pain. 

Double vision. 

Painful menstruation, inflammation of vagina and absence of menstrual period. 

Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Drug Dose Information

Oral
Adult and Child over 12 years- 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks followed by 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks, increase by 50 to 100 mg every 1
to 2 weeks to maintenance dose of 100 to 200 mg daily.

Child- Monotherapy- Inital dose 2 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks then 5 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. max. dose 5 - 15 mg/kg/day once or twice daily. With valproic acid- Initial dose - 0.5 mg/kg/ day to max. dose of 1 - 5 mg/kg/day in single dose.

Precautions

Hepatic or renal impairment
Closely monitor patient
Monitor children's body weight
Advise patient to report any hypersensitivity reaction. 
Avoid abrupt withdrawal unless severe skin reactions have developed. 
May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. 
Pregnancy and lactation.
