Ultra-broad-spectrum injectable antibiotics

Side Effects

Body as a whole- Pain, abdominal pain, chest pain, fever, back pain, abdominal enlargement, chills and pelvic pain. 

Heart- Heart failure, heart arrest, fast/slow heart rate, high/low blood pressure, heart attack, blood clot in lungs and fainting. 

Gastrointestinal- Oral infection, loss of appetite, indigestion and intestinal obstruction. 

Blood- Anemia and increased blood volume. 

Metabolic- Peripheral edema and poor oxygen supply. 

Central nervous system - Sleeplessness, agitation, confusion, dizziness, seizure, tingling, hallucinations, drowsiness, anxiety, depression and weakness. 

Respiratory- Respiratory disorder, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, pleural effusion, asthma, cough increased and lung swelling. 

Skin- Hives, sweating and skin ulcer. 

Genitourinary- Painful urination, kidney failure, vaginal infection and urinary incontinence. 

Liver- Jaundice and liver failure. 

Potentially fatal- Anaphylaxis and Stevens-Johnsons sydrome.

Drug Dose Information

Adult- 0.5-2 g or 10-40 mg/kg by slow i.v injection 8 hourly.
Neonate (less than 7 days)- 20 mg/kg 12 hourly.
7-28 days- 20 mg/kg 8 hourly.
1-3 months- 10 mg/kg 8 hourly.
> 3 months- 10- 20 mg/kg 8 hourly.

Meningitis: Adult- 2g 8 hourly.
Child- (> 3 months)- 40 mg/kg 8 hourly

Renal insufficiency

Neurological disorders

Prolonged use of meropenem may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms

Pregnancy

Lactation

History of hypersensitivity to other ß-lactam antibiotics

How To Take

Injection: Once reconstituted, up to 2 hour at room temperature or up to 12 hour at refrigerator.

Interactions

Serum levels may be increased by probenecid. May reduce serum valproic acid levels; sub-therapeutic levels may be reached in some patients.
