Gonorrhea : Gonorrhea is a common human sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
injectable ceftriaxone appears to be one of the few effective antibiotics. This is typically given in combination with either azithromycin ordoxycycline
Urethritis : Urethritis is swelling and irritation (inflammation) of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the body.
Causes
Urethritis may be caused by bacteria or a virus. The same bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (E. coli) and some sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea) can lead to urethritis. Viral causes of urethritis include herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus.
Other causes include:
• Injury
• Sensitivity to the chemicals used in spermicides or contraceptive jellies, creams, or foams
Risks for urethritis include:
• Being a female in the reproductive years
• Being male, ages 20 - 35
• Having many sexual partners
• High-risk sexual behavior (such as anal sex without a condom)
• History of sexually transmitted diseases
Symptoms
In men:

• Burning pain while urinating (dysuria)
• Discharge from penis
• Fever (rare)
• Frequent or urgent urination
• Itching, tenderness, or swelling in penis or groin area
• Pain with intercourse or ejaculation
In women:
• Abdominal pain
• Burning pain while urinating
• Fever and chills
• Frequent or urgent urination
• Pelvic pain
• Vaginal discharge
Treatment
Medications are prescribed to treat the root cause of the patient's urethritis, and to prevent the spread of infection.
If the patient has a bacterial infection, an antibiotic will be prescribed. Below are the most commonly prescribed medications for urethritis:
? Doxycycline
? Azithromycin
? Levofloxacin
? Tinidazole
? Erythromycin
? Metronidazole
Urethritis due to trichomonas infection (called trichomoniasis) is usually treated with an antibiotic called Flagyl (metronidazole). Tindamax (tinidazole) is another antibiotic that can treat trichomoniasis.
Urethritis due to herpes simplex virus can be treated with:
? Famvir (famciclovir)
? Valtrex (valacyclovir)
? Zovirax (acyclovir)
?
The patient may also take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as naproxen, along with the antibiotics for symptoms of pain.
Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is effective in treating pain, burning, frequent urination and the increased urge to urinate.
