The government of India has banned 344 fixed dose combination (FDC) drugs, including several antibiotics and analgesics(such as codeine-containing cough syrups), saying that a government-appointed panel of experts had found that the combinations lacked "therapeutic justification". Around 500 and more drugs possibly banned in future on similar grounds.
Fixed dose combination(FDA) drugs are medicines which contain two or more drugs combined in a fixed ratio but available in a single dosage.And enable a patient to take one medicine instead of several thus, it enhances patients’ compliance. Unfortunately, there has been variable enforcement of drug laws in India.
According to public health experts and doctors in India and abroad, increased use of combination drugs is dangerous since there is a panic risk of antibiotic resistance in patients. They suggest that it did not make sense to prescribe such drugs for fever and cold .The market share of combination drugs versus single drugs in India is the highest in the world.
Medical experts estimate that many analgesics, antibiotics ,cough syrups and anti-depressant medical formulations are sold in the country without approval. Studies have disclosed that several drugs that have been banned in other countries on safety grounds is also continue to be sold in India, due to lapses in the drug regulation.
On 10th March, 2016, The Government of India has issued gazette notification, listing the medicines of fixed drug combination(FDC), which have been banned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The first list of banned medicines included popular cough syrups such as Corex and Phensedyl and cough and cold medicine Vicks Action 500 Extra.
