Ampicillin is available as a capsule, liquid, and pediatric drops for oral administration. Ampicillin should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a meal. Give drug IM, or IV ,if infection is severe or if patient can't take oral dose. It is usually taken every 6 hours (four times a day). Shake the liquid and pediatric drops well before each use to mix the medication evenly.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Allopurinol - Increased risk of rash when given with ampicillin. Methotrexate - Ampicillin reduce excretion of methotrexate( thus increases toxicity). Atenolol - Decreased atenolol effectiveness. Contraceptives - Reduces the contraceptive effect. Probenecid - Excretion of penicillins is reduced by probenecid. Lansoprazole - Loss of ampicillin efficacy. Live Typhoid Vaccine - Decreased immunological response to the typhoid vaccine. Proton pump inhibitors - Efficacy of ampicillin will lose when given along with proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Esomeprazole, Pantoprazole and Rabeprazole.
